A prayer for the forgiveness of sins

This post is part of my lenten series: 40 prayers for Russia's orphans.  Won't you join us in lifting up some of the most vulnerable children in our world today?

Day 15: ...and forgive us our sins.

Merciful God,

Today we come before you asking for forgiveness. When we look at the plight of orphans in Russia we are quick to blame others, but we must not forget to examine our own hearts.

Forgive us when we have failed to answer your call to orphan care. Whether we have guarded our money, our resources, our homes, or anything else we have too closely, forgive us. When we have looked away from the loneliness of these children instead of asking ourselves what we could do, forgive us. When we have failed in trust that you will provide for your calling on our lives, forgive us.

If we have been judgmental, forgive us. If we have been proud, forgive us. If we failed to be compassionate, forgive us.

It is only by the forgiveness we find in you, that we find the grace to offer a helping hand.  We cannot be the blind, leading the blind. Before we look to be a help to the Russian orphan in any way, show us our sin and your forgiveness. Keep us humble. We are not saviors. You are Savior alone.  When you use us to accomplish your purposes, it is a gift to us and not a reason for us to be arrogant or proud. Let us not forget this important truth.

Thank you for the mercy you show us. Thank you for the grace. We strengthen ourselves with them as we look to see how you would use us in the world.

Amen.
